Cenote Carwash (Aktun Ha): From Taxi Stop to Underwater Wonderland

Once a roadside stop where taxis were washed—hence the name "Carwash"—Cenote Aktun Ha has since transformed into a stunning destination for swimming and diving, just off the highway to Cobá.

Beneath its calm surface lies a captivating underwater world. The cenote’s appearance changes with the seasons, offering a unique experience no matter when you visit. From late October to late March, the water becomes crystal clear, revealing a vibrant green floor and creating the sensation of swimming in a natural pool. From late March to late October, a bloom of green algae forms, adding a mysterious, almost surreal atmosphere.

One section of the cenote is adorned with delicate waterlilies, which appear to float above you as you explore the depths below. The underwater landscape features submerged trees, lush aquatic plants, and intriguing cave formations. It’s also home to diverse wildlife—including schools of fish, freshwater turtles, and sometimes a resident crocodile may be spotted.

Whether you're diving into its depths or simply floating on the surface, Cenote Carwash offers a magical, ever-changing experience.
