    Amazon’s Pink Dolphins in Danger

NYTimes.com has related in its recent article that even though Amazon’s pink dolphins are protected, they are still in danger as local fishermen see a rival in dolphins. Fishermen are slaughtering the animal in the Amazon, for catfish bait. Portugese biologist, Doctor Miguel Migueis who studies dolphin populations around the city of Santarem on the Amazon, has told that the killings could lead to their extinction: “They are killing their culture, their folklore, they are kil

Fernando de Noronha – Underwater Photo Gallery

Underwater visibility in Fernando de Noronha is impressive. Probably one of the best in the world. Noronha bellow surface is very colourful, but not like tropical seas. Many colourful volcanic rocks and pelagics in large quantities. See also Fernando de Noronha’s above the sea image gallery #Brazil #FernandodeNoronha #stingray

Pink dolphins of the Amazon – Part 1

The Rio Negro’s Amazons July 2009 The source of the Rio Negro (Black River) in Colombia, continuing its journey to Brazil, through the rich Amazonian forest. Here it converges with the Rio Solimões to form the Amazon. From afar, the Rio Negro appears to be black but from a closer look, it is actually dark brown. This dark color is due to the humic acid which forms due to the incomplete decomposition of the phenol contained in the vegetation of the sandy clearings. Both rivers

Meeting the pink dolphins – Part 2

July 2009 At dawn, as we are leaving the Ariau lodge situated at 60 km from Manaus, the mist is rising over the coffee-colored waters of the Rio Negro. We navigate into the bay by canoe to watch the sunrise. It’s not clear yet, the haze suggests cloudy skies. Suddenly, we hear shrilling sounds nearby that are intensifying and will not cease. Noronha, jewel of nature – Part 1

August 2009 Location If I were to tell you about a special place where no one locks their door at night, where crime is virtually nonexistent, where the number of tourists is intentionally restricted to preserve the ecological balance, and where each visitor must pay a daily fee of fifteen Euros (Approx US$20) to protect the environment, would you think about Brazil? Probably not! Yet, Fernando de Noronha, the tiny archipelago still resists the changes and other influences of

Diving Fernando de Noronha – Part 2

August 2009 Facts All year round, you can have great quality dives thought to be the most magnificent of the South American continent. The water has a pleasant average temperature of 26°C. The visibility is outstanding, ranging from 25 to 45 meters. During the months of September and October, the visibility is at its best. You won’t find there coral or microscopic life as it exists in the Indian Ocean. The underwater world of Noronha is interesting mainly for its volcanic roc
